This weeks question is:
Q: I travel a lot for business, I live in Florida, so I don’t have that much use for a winter coat. However, I would like to invest in a light weight rain coat, something timeless but also something I can throw into a suitcase. So it needs to be lightweight and foldable! I looked at Burberry … and although I love the classic look and feel, the cost was prohibitive for something I will likely only wear a handful of times per year. Any suggestions?
A: YES! I completely agree with the timeless look, quality, feel of the Burberry trench but there are some great alternatives out there, at a fraction of the price. Some styles come with detachable hoods and linings, which is perfect, if you travel from location to location and experience varying temperatures. A few tips to consider, questions to ask yourself based upon your needs, if you are buying online;
-go for a style that suits you-pay attention to size, shape and height. Do you need a petite etc.
-do you prefer single or double breasted?
-ensure you look at length.
-is it resin coated/water repellant or is this even a necessity for you personally?
-is it the right shade of khaki for you? There are about 5 different shades to choose from.
-read the reviews, as sizes can vary from designer to designer.
If you are buying in a store, try on many alternatives and still pay attention to the above. Try it open, fastened, hood up, fold it etc, so you know you feel comfortable with wearing it in different ways and know it will pack well.
There are so many versions to choose from but here are three options that I recommend to get you started on your hunt:
1. J Crew Collection Icon Trench Coat:
This signature trench in Japanese cotton is a true classic with all the classic trappings, from storm flap to buckle tab cuffs. Note: the length is a tad shorter than some of the Burberry trench styles at 34 1/2". In a recent J Crew review, a customer stated "I've been looking for a new lightweight coat which is versatile enough to wear to work through a couple of different seasons. This classic trench hits the mark perfectly"! $298.00
2. Calvin Klein Double-Breasted Trench:
This fabulous trench is both lined and lightweight, featuring the classic options, such as the rain flap, notched collar with hook clasp and is washable! Only $99.98 at Macy's. www.macys.com
3. Lands End Trench:
This is not as lightweight as the other styles but is still not that heavy. Resin-coated cotton twill gives this a protective barrier from the rain and has many nice add ons, like the storm flap and inside pocket. $200.00 www.landsend.com
Other websites to try that have great options:
I hope this gives you a few different options to think about! :)
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
